Samostatně ovládat mobilní telefon či jiné mobilní zařízení bylo dlouhá léta pro nevidomé uživatele tabu. Například napsat či přečíst SMS si sami mohli pouze tak, že si propojili mobilní telefon s počítačem, potřebná data si stáhli do PC, a pomocí screenreaderu v počítači si SMS přečetli či napsali. Což bylo zdlouhavé, nepohodlné a uživatel také nemohl reagovat na zprávu okamžitě, ale musel počkat, až se dostane k počítači, kde si ji přečte.
Kolem roku 2005 se objevily první ozvučené mobilní telefony a pro nevidomé uživatele se jednalo o velký krok k samostatnosti. Při práci s mobilním telefonem už nemusel čekat, až se dostane k PC, ale mohl jej používat kdekoliv. Na začátku byly zpřístupněny jen základní funkce (volání, práce s kontakty, čtení/psaní SMS), dnes už je možné používat i e-mailového klienta, přistupovat na web, číst knihy či nechat se pomocí mobilního telefonu navigovat. Důležitou roli hrála přístupnost klávesnice mobilního telefonu, tzn. zda má konkrétní model dostatečně hmatná tlačítka a uživatel jej tak bude moci samostatně ovládat. Tyto modely ale postupně začínají vytlačovat z trhu přístroje s dotykovým ovládáním.
Dalším milníkem v oblasti ozvučených mobilních telefonů je proto nástup mobilních telefonů právě s tímto způsobem ovládání. Leaderem v této oblasti je Apple, který ve všech svých produktech nabízí odečítač Voice Over, plně zpřístupňující prostředí telefonu i aplikace. Při práci s Voice Overem na zařízení s dotykovým displejem je vidět, že při jeho implementaci někdo přemýšlel a že je řada věcí promyšlena a navržena s ohledem na ovládání poslepu (podívejte se, jak si může nevidomý uživatel na iPadu pustit ČT 24).
Ale ani Google s Androidem nezůstává pozadu a pro Android už jsou dnes k dispozici dva bezplatné screenreadery - Talk Back a Spiel. Ačkoliv zde zatím není zpřístupněno vše, může být toto řešení pro některé uživatele zajímavé, protože jeho pořizovací cena je výrazně nižší oproti komerčně nabízeným řešením.
I přes tyto úspěchy je ale v oblasti přístupnosti mobilních telefonů s dotykovým ovládáním stále co vylepšovat. Stále existují aplikace, které by nevidomým uživatelům pomohly, ale nejsou plně přístupné, jejich ovládání také mnohdy není ergonomické, atp. Navíc samostatné používání mobilních telefonů uživateli s handicapem už dnes není z oblasti science fiction (jako tomu bylo před lety), ale běžná praxe. Úsilí, věnované jejich zpřístupnění, tak není jen formální úlitba standardům přístupnosti, ale má reálný dopad, a je uživatelům opravdu ku pomoci.
